A Gente Vai or Nós Vamos? Present-Tense Verb Agreement Practice — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

Choose the subject before choosing the verb

A gente and nós can both refer to a group that includes the speaker. Their verb forms are different: a gente takes the third-person singular, while nós takes the first-person plural. In present-tense statements, compare a gente trabalha with nós trabalhamos. Choose one subject pattern and finish it consistently.

This worksheet focuses on changing the subject and the present-tense verb together. It does not ask you to decide which pronoun is more Brazilian or more correct. Both are useful. Notice the written forms even if some endings sound less distinct in connected speech.

For the meaning of a gente, com a gente and the spelling difference from agente, use our main A Gente vs. Nós reference. This page is specifically the present-tense transformation worksheet.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Choose the subject before choosing the verb
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
A gente trabalha aqui.We work here.
    Nós trabalhamos aqui.We work here.
A gente vai de ônibus. We go by bus.

Switch the subject and keep the message

To change a gente estuda to nós, replace estuda with estudamos. To change nós temos to a gente, use tem. Do not simply add an s to a verb: common verbs such as ir and ter have forms you need to learn as pairs.

Try describing the same group twice. Keep the place, time, and activity the same while changing only the subject and its agreeing verb. This makes the grammar change easier to hear and prevents you from accidentally comparing two different situations.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
