Accessible Hiking in Brazil: Ask About the Trail Route and Surface — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

Ask what the trail surface is like

Piso means surface or flooring, and terreno means terrain. Ask whether the trail is paved, compacted, rocky, or sandy, and whether there are steps. A general ‘easy’ label may not describe the details that matter for your group.

Ask park staff or a local guide for current information about the route and any sections that have changed.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask what the trail surface is like
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Como é o piso desta trilha? What is the surface of this trail like?
Há escadas ou trechos muito inclinados? Are there stairs or very steep sections?

Describe the route features you need to check

You can ask about the route without needing a technical term: quero saber se há um caminho sem degraus (I want to know whether there is a step-free path). Mention whether you need a place to rest or a particular kind of access information.

The park or guide can explain the route as it is currently maintained. Do not assume that a nearby viewpoint or the start of a trail has the same surface as the full route.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Describe the route features you need to check
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Existe um percurso sem degraus até o mirante? Is there a step-free route to the viewpoint?
Há bancos ou lugares para descansar no caminho? Are there benches or places to rest along the way?

Confirm access for the entire outing

Ask how far the route continues and whether the return path is the same. If you are with a group, explain what details you need before deciding whether the outing is suitable.

Trail conditions, closures, and facilities vary by location and date. Use current information from the park or responsible guide.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Confirm access for the entire outing
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
O caminho de volta é pelo mesmo percurso? Is the return route the same path?
Você pode explicar as condições atuais da trilha?Could you explain the current trail conditions?

Remember: Ask for current details about surfaces, slopes, steps, rest areas, and the full return route before choosing a hike.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask for current details about surfaces, slopes, steps, rest areas, and the full return route before choosing a hike.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
