At the End vs. In the End in Portuguese: No Final or No Fim — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use no fim for the end of a period or place
No fim de points to the end of a timeline, route, or sequence. It is often followed by a noun such as semana, rua, or reunião.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A gente conversa no fim da semana. | We’ll talk at the end of the week. |
| O banheiro fica no fim do corredor. | The bathroom is at the end of the hallway. |
Use no final for a concluding part
No final commonly refers to the final part of a film, book, event, or process. It can overlap with no fim, but often points to the closing section rather than a result reached after events.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A resposta aparece no final do vídeo. | The answer appears at the end of the video. |
| No final da reunião, revisamos as tarefas. | At the end of the meeting, we reviewed the tasks. |
Use no fim das contas for the outcome
No fim das contas is an idiom meaning ‘in the end,’ ‘after all,’ or ‘when all is said and done.’ It summarizes the result after considering the situation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| No fim das contas, foi uma boa decisão. | In the end, it was a good decision. |
| A viagem deu trabalho, mas no fim das contas valeu a pena. | The trip was a lot of work, but in the end it was worth it. |
Remember: Use no fim or no final for an endpoint and no fim das contas to summarize the final outcome.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use no fim or no final for an endpoint and no fim das contas to summarize the final outcome.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
