Use até to mark an endpoint

Até often means ‘until’ when it marks the end of a period or activity: trabalho até as seis (I work until six). Before a person or place, it can mean ‘as far as’ or ‘all the way to’: fomos até a praia (we went all the way to the beach). The noun or time phrase after até tells you which endpoint is meant.

In farewells, até can look ahead to the next time you expect to see someone: até amanhã (see you tomorrow), até mais (see you later). Learn these as complete expressions rather than translating até alone.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use até to mark an endpoint
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
A loja fica aberta até as nove. The store stays open until nine.
A gente caminhou até o parque. We walked as far as the park.
Até amanhã, pessoal!See you tomorrow, everyone!

Recognize até as ‘even’ or ‘as many as’

Before a person or thing, até can highlight something unexpected or include it as the final item in a group: até a gerente ajudou (even the manager helped). Before a number, it can set a maximum: até dez pessoas (up to ten people). The surrounding sentence supplies the intended emphasis.

Do not force the same English word into every translation. Look at whether até sets a boundary, includes an example, or emphasizes a surprising participant.

Remember: Use the phrase around até to identify its role: an endpoint (‘until/to’), an inclusive example (‘even’), or a limit (‘up to’).

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Use the phrase around até to identify its role: an endpoint (‘until/to’), an inclusive example (‘even’), or a limit (‘up to’).

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
