Atender vs. Responder in Portuguese: Answer a Call or Reply to a Message — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use atender for picking up a call or assisting someone
Atender o telefone means to answer or pick up the phone. Atender uma pessoa or atender um cliente means to assist or serve that person, as at a reception desk or shop. The object and situation show which sense is intended.
The verb also appears in phrases such as atender ao pedido (meet a request) and atender a uma necessidade (meet a need). Learn these combinations in context because the preposition can depend on the meaning.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Não consegui atender o telefone durante a reunião. | I couldn’t answer the phone during the meeting. |
| A recepcionista vai atender você em alguns minutos. | The receptionist will assist you in a few minutes. |
| A empresa ainda não atendeu ao nosso pedido. | The company still hasn’t met our request. |
Use responder when you give an answer or reply
Responder focuses on giving a verbal or written answer. It works with a question, an email, a message, or a person: responder à pergunta, responder ao e-mail, responder a alguém. In informal Brazilian speech and writing, you may also see the object without the preposition; recognize the more careful written pattern with a.
A phone can ring and someone can atender; after that, the person can responder à pergunta. Keeping the two actions separate makes the sequence clear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vou responder ao seu e-mail ainda hoje. | I’ll reply to your email later today. |
| Ela atendeu a ligação e respondeu à pergunta do cliente. | She answered the call and replied to the customer’s question. |
| Você pode responder quando tiver um minuto? | Can you reply when you have a minute? |
Remember: Atender often means to pick up a call or assist someone; responder means to give an answer or reply. A single interaction may use both verbs.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Atender often means to pick up a call or assist someone; responder means to give an answer or reply. A single interaction may use both verbs.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
