Brazilian Date Format: DD/MM/YYYY and How to Read It — Practice

What date format does Brazil use?

The usual Brazilian date format is day/month/year (DD/MM/YYYY). In Brazil, 03/04/2027 means 3 April 2027, not March 4. To say it in Portuguese, use três de abril de dois mil e vinte e sete. On Portuguese forms, YYYY may appear as AAAA, for ano (year).

Start with the day, identify the month, and then read the year. A leading zero does not change the day or month: 03/04 and 3/4 can represent the same date. For travel plans, keep the full year so nobody has to infer which year you mean.

Brazil vs. US date format: compare the same calendar day

The United States commonly writes month/day/year. To convert a Brazilian numeric date to that convention, swap the first two parts and keep the year. The calendar day stays the same; only its written order changes.

Dates with both numbers from 1 to 12 are easy to misread across countries. A number above 12 can reveal the day, but you should still check the format shown on the document or booking screen. An international service can use a different display format from a local Brazilian form.

    • 3 April 2027: Brazil 03/04/2027; US 04/03/2027.
    • 4 March 2027: Brazil 04/03/2027; US 03/04/2027.
    • 19 October 2026: Brazil 19/10/2026; US 10/19/2026.
    • For a message between countries, write 3 April 2027 or 3 de abril de 2027 instead of relying on 03/04/2027.

How to say a date in Brazilian Portuguese

Use day + de + month + de + year. For days 2–31, use ordinary counting numbers: dois, três, quatorze, vinte e um. English may say “the twenty-first,” but Portuguese normally says vinte e um in a date.

For the first day of the month, use primeiro: primeiro de maio. Do not extend that pattern to 21 or 31. Write month names in lowercase inside a sentence. You can include dia before the day number: hoje é dia três de abril.

Read a year such as 2027 as dois mil e vinte e sete. If the year is already clear, it is natural to leave it out: a reunião é no dia três de abril.

    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Hoje é primeiro de maio.Today is May 1.
A reunião é no dia vinte e um de agosto. The meeting is on August 21.
O curso começa em trinta e um de janeiro. The course starts on January 31.

    Read month numbers without guessing

The middle number identifies the month in a Brazilian numeric date. Check it before translating the date into English, especially when your usual format puts the month first. Notice the cedilla in março and the different spellings junho and julho.

Practice in both directions: turn 09 into setembro, then turn setembro back into 09. This helps when you hear a month in a conversation and need to find it in a calendar.

    • 01 janeiro — January; 02 fevereiro — February; 03 março — March.
    • 04 abril — April; 05 maio — May; 06 junho — June.
    • 07 julho — July; 08 agosto — August; 09 setembro — September.
    • 10 outubro — October; 11 novembro — November; 12 dezembro — December.

Confirm a date in a booking or WhatsApp conversation

If a message says “Sua reserva é para 06/07”, repeat the month as a word. This confirms the intended day without making the other person explain date conventions. Ask for the year as well if it is missing and matters to your plans.

Try this original practice dialogue. You are checking a reservation, so your final reply repeats the complete date. The example is written practice, not a recording or an actual booking.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Confirm a date in a booking or WhatsApp conversation
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Recepção: Sua reserva é para 06/07.Reception: Your reservation is for 06/07.
Você: Só para confirmar: seis de julho de 2027?You: Just to confirm: July 6, 2027?
Recepção: Isso, seis de julho.Reception: That’s right, July 6.
Você: Obrigado! Então chego no dia seis de julho de 2027.You: Thank you! Then I arrive on July 6, 2027.

Use em, no dia, and para with dates

Learn a short sentence around the date. Use em for a month or year: em julho, em 2027. With a specific day, em 6 de julho and no dia 6 de julho both occur; no dia makes the day explicit. Para often introduces the date something is scheduled for.

These words follow the meaning of the sentence, so you do not need to attach one fixed preposition to every date. Compare arriving on a date with moving an appointment to a date.

    Quick questions about Brazilian dates

Is Brazil day/month/year or month/day/year? The usual local numeric format is day/month/year. Read the label on an international app or form rather than assuming every screen follows the local convention.

What does 04/05 mean in Brazil? In the usual Brazilian format it means 4 May. Say quatro de maio to remove the ambiguity.

Does Brazil use YYYY-MM-DD? You may encounter year-first dates in software and international records. Treat 2027-04-03 as a different format from a local DD/MM/YYYY field; check the label or documentation instead of swapping numbers automatically.

Remember: Choose one date from your own plans. Say it in Portuguese, write the month in words, and ask “Só para confirmar: é dia…?” Continue practicing everyday Brazilian Portuguese with the Real Life Portuguese app.

Choose the language for the situation

Now use the explanation to decide what fits the situation. Check the reason for the answer, not just the option you chose.

A Brazilian booking says 08/09/2027. Which date is it?
How would you say May 21 in a normal Brazilian Portuguese date?
A message from abroad says 04/05. Which reply best confirms the intended date?
Which pair represents the same calendar day?

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Choose one date from your own plans. Say it in Portuguese, write the month in words, and ask “Só para confirmar: é dia…?” Continue practicing everyday Brazilian Portuguese with the Real Life Portuguese app.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
