Ask what something costs and how it is sold

A feira is an open-air market, and a feira livre usually refers to a street market with produce and other stalls. Start with Quanto custa? (How much does it cost?) or Quanto está o quilo? (How much is a kilo?). Prices may be listed per kilo, per item, or by another measure, so confirm before ordering.

Use meio quilo for half a kilo and um quilo for one kilo. If you want a small number of items, say the quantity and repeat the product name; the vendor can tell you if it is sold by weight.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask what something costs and how it is sold
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quanto está o quilo da manga? How much is a kilo of mango?
Pode separar meio quilo de tomates?Could you set aside half a kilo of tomatoes?
Quanto fica essa dúzia de bananas? How much is that dozen bananas?

Choose produce and confirm the total

If you want to ask whether fruit is ripe or sweet, say Está maduro? (Is it ripe?) or É doce? (Is it sweet?). These questions help you learn about the item, but the vendor’s answer is not a guarantee that every piece tastes the same.

Before you pay, check the total with Quanto deu? (How much is it altogether?) or É só isso? (Is that everything?). Payment options vary by stall and location, so ask directly whether they accept card, cash, or a local digital payment method.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Choose produce and confirm the total
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Esse abacate está maduro para hoje?Is this avocado ripe for today?
Quanto deu tudo? How much is everything?
    Aceita cartão?Do you accept cards?

Remember: Ask whether produce is priced by weight or item, name the amount you want, and confirm the total and accepted payment method before finishing the purchase.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Quanto está o quilo da manga?

Context: Ask what something costs and how it is sold

Pode separar meio quilo de tomates?

Context: Ask what something costs and how it is sold

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask whether produce is priced by weight or item, name the amount you want, and confirm the total and accepted payment method before finishing the purchase.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
