Rewrite a WhatsApp Message in Full Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Recover the complete words first
Informal messages often shorten você to vc and também to tb. The abbreviation pq needs more context: it may stand for por que in a question or porque when giving a reason. Read the whole message before expanding it. Punctuation and the surrounding exchange help you decide.
The following short messages are written exercises, not screenshots or quotations from a private conversation. Practice expanding them before deciding whether to change the tone. A complete spelling is useful when writing to someone you do not know, but using it does not automatically make the message formal.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vc vem tb? | Are you coming too? |
| Você vem também? | Are you coming too? |
| Pq vc não vem? | Why aren’t you coming? |
Separate the question from the reason
Use por que when asking why, as in por que você não vem? Use porque to introduce the reason, as in porque tenho aula. These are the two uses practiced here; Portuguese has other written forms, including por quê at the end of a question and the noun porquê.
After expanding the message, check whether the reader needs a greeting, a time, or the purpose of your question. Do not remove useful details just to sound polished. Rewrite one short message clearly, then compare it with the version you would send to a close friend.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Por que você não vem? | Why aren’t you coming? |
| Não vou porque tenho aula. | I’m not going because I have class. |
| Oi, você pode confirmar o horário? | Hi, can you confirm the time? |
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
