Buy and Sell Used Items in Brazil: Portuguese for Marketplace Messages — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Check whether the item is still available
Anúncio is a listing, produto is an item, and usado means used or second-hand. Start with Oi, ainda está disponível? (Hi, is it still available?). If you are selling, respond clearly and confirm which item the person means.
Ask about condition with Está funcionando bem? (Is it working well?) or Tem algum defeito? (Does it have any defect?). These questions work for many items, but inspect the object when possible.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Oi, a bicicleta ainda está disponível? | Hi, is the bicycle still available? |
| Tem algum risco ou defeito? | Does it have any scratches or defects? |
| Você pode mandar mais uma foto? | Can you send one more photo? |
Discuss the price and pickup details
To ask whether a price is flexible, say O preço é negociável? (Is the price negotiable?). If you agree, confirm the amount and how you will collect the item. Include a date, time, and meeting place; the exact arrangement depends on the people involved.
Online listings can change, so confirm that the item is still available before making a trip. Keep the exchange focused on details needed for the transaction.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você aceita trezentos reais? | Would you accept three hundred reais? |
| Posso buscar amanhã à tarde? | Can I pick it up tomorrow afternoon? |
| Qual é um ponto de encontro fácil para você? | What is an easy meeting point for you? |
Close the exchange with a clear confirmation
Repeat what you agreed on: the item, price, time, and meeting place. If you need to change the plan, tell the other person and suggest a specific alternative rather than leaving the message open.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Combinado: amanhã às três, na entrada do parque. | Agreed: tomorrow at three, at the park entrance. |
| Desculpa, vou me atrasar dez minutos. | Sorry, I'm going to be ten minutes late. |
| Pode confirmar se este é o endereço certo? | Can you confirm whether this is the correct address? |
Remember: Practice an availability question, a question about condition, and one message confirming pickup. Replace the sample details with a realistic example.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice an availability question, a question about condition, and one message confirming pickup. Replace the sample details with a realistic example.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
