Se Eu Entendi Bem: Check Your Understanding in Portuguese

You followed most of the conversation, but one detail changes the plan. Say what you think the person meant and leave room for correction. A short paraphrase can reveal a misunderstanding that another repetition of the same sentence would not fix.

Make your understanding a proposal to check

Se eu entendi bem… means “If I understood correctly…” Follow it with your current understanding: Se eu entendi bem, a gente se encontra na entrada principal. — “If I understood correctly, we meet at the main entrance.”

This is different from saying you forgot one word. You are checking the message as a whole. It also differs from Você quer dizer que…? — “Do you mean that…?” which asks the person to confirm your interpretation. Either can work if the proposed meaning is short and specific.

Check the detail that affects the next action

For a plan, repeat who, where or when. For an explanation, repeat the main relationship: Então você saiu mais cedo porque precisava pegar o ônibus? — “So you left earlier because you needed to catch the bus?” Avoid adding a reason the person never gave.

A useful paraphrase is simpler than the original and faithful to it. If you only heard the meeting place but not the time, do not invent both and ask whether the whole sentence is right. Say Entendi o lugar. Não entendi o horário. — “I understood the place. I didn’t understand the time.” That gives the other person a precise repair target.

A successful check may receive a no

Friend: A gente se encontra no café depois da aula. — We’ll meet at the café after class.
You: Se eu entendi bem, é antes da aula, certo? — If I understood correctly, it’s before class, right?
Friend: Não, depois da aula. — No, after class.
You: Ah, depois. Entendi agora. — Oh, after. I understand now.

The check worked because it exposed the error. You do not need to defend your first interpretation. Repeat the corrected detail once so both people can hear that the final plan matches.

Practice: decide what is known and unknown

    1. You heard that tomorrow’s lesson is online, not at the school. Confirm that distinction.
    2. You understood the café location but missed the meeting time. State the limit of your understanding.
    3. Your partner corrects Thursday to Friday. Confirm only the final day.
    Show possible answers
    1. Se eu entendi bem, amanhã a aula é online, não na escola?
    2. Entendi onde é. A que horas a gente se encontra? — I understood where it is. What time do we meet?
    3. Então ficou sexta, certo? — So Friday is confirmed, right?

With a partner, describe a simple plan containing one time and one place. Ask the listener to summarize it without copying your exact sentence. Change one detail and repeat. Keep the goal to accurate shared meaning; this is not a test of whether you can imitate every sound in the original sentence.

    Frequently asked questions

What does se eu entendi bem mean?

It means if I understood correctly. Use it before a short statement of what you believe the person meant.

Should I repeat the whole explanation?

Usually a short check of the important detail is clearer. State which part you understood and ask about the part you missed.
