Describe Your Pet in Portuguese: Personality and Routine — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Choose an adjective for your pet's personality
Carinhoso or carinhosa means affectionate, brincalhão or brincalhona means playful, and tranquilo or tranquila means calm. These adjectives change form to match the animal: meu cachorro é tranquilo, but minha cachorra é tranquila.
Energetic is cheio de energia (full of energy). Use a specific description when you can—curious around new people, sleepy after a walk, or cautious in a noisy place.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Minha gata é curiosa e carinhosa. | My cat is curious and affectionate. |
| O cachorro é brincalhão, mas fica tranquilo em casa. | The dog is playful but stays calm at home. |
Describe everyday habits with present-tense verbs
Use costuma + infinitive to describe what an animal usually does: Ela costuma dormir de manhã (She usually sleeps in the morning). Passear means to go for a walk, brincar means to play, and dormir means to sleep.
Add a frequency word such as sempre (always), às vezes (sometimes), or quase nunca (almost never). Put it near the verb and listen to how the whole sentence sounds.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ele costuma pedir para brincar depois do jantar. | He usually asks to play after dinner. |
| Às vezes, ela dorme no sofá. | Sometimes, she sleeps on the sofa. |
Share details when you introduce your pet
When someone asks about your animal, combine its name with one personality trait and one routine. This gives the other person an easy detail to respond to and lets you practice adjective agreement in context.
If you are describing what a pet is comfortable with, distinguish what you know from what you are still learning. For instance, gosta de… (likes to…) differs from está acostumado a… (is used to…).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esse é o Bento. Ele é sociável e gosta de passear cedo. | This is Bento. He is sociable and likes going for walks early. |
| Ela ainda não está acostumada a viajar de carro. | She is not used to traveling by car yet. |
Remember: Introduce a pet with its name, one adjective, and one routine. Add costuma or a frequency word to make the description more specific.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Introduce a pet with its name, one adjective, and one routine. Add costuma or a frequency word to make the description more specific.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
