Your First Capoeira Class in Brazil: Portuguese for Beginners — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask whether beginners can participate
Capoeira combines movement, music, and interaction in a roda (a circle where participants play). A group may welcome newcomers in different ways, so ask the instructor how a beginner should take part rather than assuming every class follows the same format.
Ask what the first class covers and whether the instructor wants newcomers to watch a round before joining. That lets you learn the group's approach before entering the roda.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A aula é aberta para iniciantes? | Is the class open to beginners? |
| Como funciona a primeira aula? | How does the first class work? |
Check clothing and class preparation
Ask what clothing to wear and whether the group provides any uniform or equipment. Some groups use a corda (cord or belt) to mark stages of practice, but colors and systems are not universal across every group.
Arrive with enough time to introduce yourself and ask where to put your belongings. Follow the instructor's guidance about warm-up and participation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Que roupa devo usar na aula? | What should I wear to class? |
| Preciso levar algum material? | Do I need to bring any equipment? |
Follow the group's cues respectfully
Listen for instructions from the instructor and watch how the group enters and leaves the roda. If you are not sure when to play, ask when the class is paused rather than stepping into the circle without knowing the group's convention.
Capoeira has varied traditions and practices. Learn the vocabulary from the people teaching you and avoid treating one group's customs as a rule for everyone.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quando posso entrar na roda? | When can I enter the roda? |
| Você pode me mostrar o movimento mais uma vez? | Could you show me the movement one more time? |
Remember: Ask the instructor how beginners participate, what to wear, and which cues the group uses.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask the instructor how beginners participate, what to wear, and which cues the group uses.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
