Your First Day at Work in Brazil: Portuguese for Introductions and Questions — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Introduce yourself and learn people's names
A simple introduction can include your name, role, and team: sou a Alex, vou trabalhar com atendimento (I'm Alex, I'll be working in customer service). Keep it brief and ask the other person what they do or which team they are part of.
If you do not catch a name, ask the person to repeat it or spell it. This is easier than pretending you heard and avoiding the person later.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Oi, sou a Alex. Começo hoje na equipe de marketing. | Hi, I'm Alex. I start with the marketing team today. |
| Desculpa, pode repetir seu nome? | Sorry, could you repeat your name? |
Ask how the first tasks are organized
Use por onde eu começo? (where should I start?) or qual é a prioridade para hoje? (what is the priority for today?) when you need direction. If an instruction contains several steps, ask the coworker to repeat the order or show you the system.
It is useful to distinguish what is urgent from what you should learn gradually. Explain what you have already done so the other person does not repeat an instruction unnecessarily.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode me mostrar onde encontro esse arquivo? | Can you show me where I can find that file? |
| Qual tarefa é mais urgente esta manhã? | Which task is most urgent this morning? |
Find the right person and confirm the next step
Ask who handles a system, schedule, or workplace process instead of guessing. If you need help later, check whether a message, shared document, or conversation is the preferred channel for that question.
Before you finish the day, repeat the main task or appointment you have been given. A short recap helps you check that you understood the expected result and when to follow up.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quem pode me ajudar com o acesso ao sistema? | Who can help me with system access? |
| Então, amanhã começo pelo treinamento e depois falo com você? | So, tomorrow I start with the training and then talk to you? |
Remember: Introduce yourself, ask where to begin, and confirm who can help with questions. Clear short questions make a new workplace easier to navigate.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Introduce yourself, ask where to begin, and confirm who can help with questions. Clear short questions make a new workplace easier to navigate.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
