Use já with a past verb to ask about experience

To ask whether someone has ever done something, Brazilian Portuguese commonly places já (ever / already) with the simple past. English often uses the present perfect, but the Portuguese sentence can use a completed past form to ask about a life experience without naming a date.

Use the question pattern você já + past verb…? In the answer, someone can say já (yes, I have) or nunca (never), then add a detail if they want.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use já with a past verb to ask about experience
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Você já visitou o Rio de Janeiro?Have you ever visited Rio de Janeiro?
Você já comeu acarajé?Have you ever eaten acarajé?
Já, mas faz muito tempo.Yes, but it was a long time ago.

Add a detail after the yes-or-no answer

The question opens a conversation about experience. Follow with when, where, or how it felt. Keep já with the experience question; when you name a finished time such as ontem or no ano passado, the simple past still fits, but the question is now about that specific occasion.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

For a general life-experience question, try já + a simple-past verb. Add a follow-up about when or where to turn the grammar pattern into a conversation.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
