At a Hospital Reception in Brazil: Ask Where to Check In — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Explain why you are at the reception
Hospital staff can direct you to the appropriate entrance or department. Briefly say whether you have an appointment, are accompanying someone, or need general directions. If it is an emergency, tell staff clearly and follow their directions.
Setor means department or unit. If you have a department name on a message or appointment confirmation, show it to reception and ask where to go.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tenho uma consulta marcada. Onde faço o check-in? | I have an appointment. Where do I check in? |
| Estou procurando o setor de cardiologia. Pode me orientar? | I’m looking for the cardiology department. Could you direct me? |
Find the correct entrance or waiting area
A hospital may have separate entrances or check-in points. Ask which entrance applies to your visit, then confirm whether to take an elevator or follow a corridor. Local signs and staff directions take priority over a general phrase guide.
If you are accompanying a patient, ask what the current visitor process is. Policies vary by facility and can change, so do not assume that visitors use the same entrance or hours.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta é a entrada para consultas? | Is this the entrance for appointments? |
| Qual é o horário de visita hoje? | What are today’s visiting hours? |
Ask staff to repeat or write down directions
If you did not catch the instructions, ask the person to repeat them more slowly or write down the department name. It is normal to check a floor, room, or building before walking away.
You can repeat the destination back to confirm you understood. This small check can prevent a mix-up in a large facility.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Pode repetir o andar e o número da sala, por favor? | Could you repeat the floor and room number, please? |
| Então, é no segundo andar, perto da recepção? | So it’s on the second floor, near reception? |
Remember: Use the hospital’s current instructions for entry, check-in, and visiting rules. If you need urgent help, tell staff what is happening and follow their guidance.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use the hospital’s current instructions for entry, check-in, and visiting rules. If you need urgent help, tell staff what is happening and follow their guidance.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
