Invite Guests to a Shared Home: Portuguese for Roommate Agreements — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Give a simple heads-up
Visita is a visitor or visit, and receber alguém means to have someone over. In a shared home, giving notice helps everyone plan around the kitchen, living room, or bathroom. Follow any agreement your household has made about guests.
Say who is coming, roughly when, and whether the person will stay overnight. You can ask whether the timing works instead of assuming your roommate has no plans.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Uma amiga vai passar aqui depois do trabalho. | A friend is stopping by after work. |
| Tudo bem se meu irmão dormir aqui na sexta? | Is it okay if my brother sleeps here on Friday? |
Coordinate shared spaces
If you plan to use a common area, ask whether anyone needs it at that time. This is especially useful for a video call, meal, or gathering that might affect someone's work or rest.
Use a gente pode usar a sala? to check permission in a friendly way. If the visit is flexible, offer another time.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A gente pode usar a sala por uma hora? | Can we use the living room for an hour? |
| Se esse horário atrapalhar, podemos sair mais cedo. | If that time gets in the way, we can leave earlier. |
Discuss overnight visits clearly
A short conversation can make expectations clear: how often overnight guests stay, whether they need access to a key, and which shared areas they will use. Rules may come from a rental or building agreement, so check the terms that apply to your home.
Try to make the conversation mutual. Ask what your roommate considers reasonable and share your own preference without presenting it as a rule for every household.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como você prefere combinar visitas durante a semana? | How do you prefer to coordinate guests during the week? |
| Vamos avisar com antecedência quando alguém for dormir aqui? | Shall we give notice ahead of time when someone will sleep here? |
Remember: Share the timing, check shared-space needs, and agree together on expectations for overnight guests.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Share the timing, check shared-space needs, and agree together on expectations for overnight guests.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
