Library vs. Livraria: Find or Borrow a Book in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use biblioteca for a library
A biblioteca is a place to read or borrow books. A public library may let you register, borrow a title, and return it by a due date. Use emprestar when the library lends you a book and devolver when you take it back.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde fica a biblioteca mais próxima? | Where is the nearest library? |
| Posso pegar este livro emprestado? | Can I borrow this book? |
Use livraria for a bookstore
A livraria is a shop that sells books. If you want to purchase a title, ask whether they have it in stock and how much it costs. This distinction prevents the English word library from leading you to the wrong kind of place.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tem uma livraria aqui perto? | Is there a bookstore nearby? |
| Vocês têm esse livro em inglês? | Do you have this book in English? |
Choose the verb that matches what you want to do
Ask where to borrow a title with pegar emprestado; ask where to buy it with comprar. You can still read in either place, so think about whether your goal is to take a book home temporarily or own a copy.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quero comprar um dicionário de português. | I want to buy a Portuguese dictionary. |
| Preciso devolver estes livros à biblioteca. | I need to return these books to the library. |
Remember: Biblioteca is library; livraria is bookstore. The verb—borrow, return, or buy—helps make your meaning clear.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Biblioteca is library; livraria is bookstore. The verb—borrow, return, or buy—helps make your meaning clear.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
