O Pessoal Is Singular: Talk About a Group in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Pair o pessoal with a singular verb
O pessoal is a common collective noun for a group of people, a team, or everyone in a familiar setting. Grammatically it is singular, so use a singular verb: o pessoal chegou (the group arrived), o pessoal está esperando (everyone is waiting). The meaning is plural, but the noun form is singular.
The phrase is informal and conversational. For a more neutral or formal message, use as pessoas (the people) or a specific group such as a equipe (the team).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O pessoal do escritório vai almoçar junto. | The office group is going to have lunch together. |
| O pessoal já está na sala. | Everyone is already in the room. |
| As pessoas chegaram em horários diferentes. | The people arrived at different times. |
Keep other agreement words tied to the noun
Because pessoal is masculine singular, adjectives and articles connected to it also use masculine singular forms: o pessoal animado, o pessoal brasileiro. If you replace it with pessoas, use feminine plural agreement: as pessoas animadas.
In quick speech, group meaning can make a sentence feel plural, but the standard written pattern keeps the verb singular. This is a useful detail for captions, email, and learner writing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O pessoal novo ainda não conhece o prédio. | The new staff haven’t seen the building yet. |
| A equipe está pronta para começar. | The team is ready to begin. |
| O pessoal da festa foi embora cedo. | The party group left early. |
Remember: O pessoal refers to a group but is grammatically masculine singular: o pessoal chegou, está animado. Use pessoas or equipe for a different tone, with matching agreement.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
O pessoal refers to a group but is grammatically masculine singular: o pessoal chegou, está animado. Use pessoas or equipe for a different tone, with matching agreement.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
