Ask About a Make-Up Exam at a Brazilian University — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Identify the course and exam you missed
Prova substitutiva, segunda chamada, and avaliação substitutiva are terms some institutions use for a make-up or second-sitting exam. Terminology and availability vary, so use the name in your course or university instructions.
State the class, date, and professor before describing your request. Keep the explanation factual and private details limited to what the official process asks for.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Faltei à prova de química na terça-feira. | I missed the chemistry exam on Tuesday. |
| Gostaria de saber se há uma avaliação substitutiva para esta disciplina. | I would like to know whether there is a make-up exam for this course. |
Ask which process and documentation apply
Ask where to submit the request and whether there is a form or deadline. Do not assume that a make-up exam is automatically available; the institution's current academic rules determine the process.
If documentation is required, ask which office reviews it and how the information should be submitted securely.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual formulário devo preencher para fazer a solicitação? | Which form should I complete to submit the request? |
| Existe um prazo para enviar a documentação? | Is there a deadline to send the documentation? |
Confirm the answer in the official channel
Ask when you should expect a response and how the result will be communicated. If the request is approved, confirm the exam date, room, and format with the instructor or academic office.
Keep the confirmation and any new instructions with your course notes.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Por qual canal vou receber a resposta? | Through which channel will I receive the response? |
| Se a solicitação for aprovada, onde confirmo o horário da prova? | If the request is approved, where do I confirm the exam time? |
Remember: Name the missed exam, ask for the institution's current process, and confirm any approved next step in writing.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
I missed the chemistry exam on Tuesday.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name the missed exam, ask for the institution's current process, and confirm any approved next step in writing.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
