Portuguese for a Book Club: Share an Opinion and Ask a Question — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

    October 20, 2026 4 min practice

Open with a short reaction to the book

Use Gostei de… to say you liked something and Achei… to introduce what you found or thought. A personagem is a character, and o final is the ending. Add one reason so your comment gives others something to respond to.

If you did not finish the book, say so plainly. You can still ask about a chapter or listen to the group without pretending that you have read every page.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Open with a short reaction to the book
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Gostei da personagem principal porque ela muda ao longo da história.I liked the main character because she changes over the course of the story.
Ainda não terminei o livro, mas li até o capítulo cinco.I haven't finished the book yet, but I read through chapter five.

Ask about a passage or another reader's view

Use O que você quis dizer com…? to ask what someone meant by a phrase. Qual parte chamou mais a sua atenção? invites the group to name the section that stood out to them.

Refer to a page or chapter when it helps everyone find the same passage. A quick reference keeps the conversation connected to the text.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask about a passage or another reader's view
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
O que você quis dizer com ‘final aberto’?What did you mean by ‘open ending’?
Qual parte chamou mais a sua atenção?Which part stood out to you the most?

Disagree without shutting down the conversation

Eu vejo de outro jeito means ‘I see it differently.’ Add a reason and an open question so the other reader can explain their interpretation. Maybe softens a suggestion, as in Talvez o narrador não seja confiável (Maybe the narrator is unreliable).

You can agree with one part of an idea while offering another reading. The goal of a book discussion is to compare interpretations, not to find a single approved answer.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Disagree without shutting down the conversation
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Entendo, mas eu vejo de outro jeito. O que fez você pensar assim?I see, but I view it differently. What made you think that?
Talvez essa cena explique por que ela foi embora.Maybe that scene explains why she left.

Remember: Share one reaction, anchor it to a passage, and ask a follow-up question that invites another reader to explain their view.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Gostei da personagem principal porque ela muda ao longo da história.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Share one reaction, anchor it to a passage, and ask a follow-up question that invites another reader to explain their view.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
