At Brazilian Airport Immigration: Explain Your Visit in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Answer with the purpose and length of your trip
At an arrival desk, an officer may ask the reason for your visit, where you will stay, and how long you plan to remain. Keep answers short and consistent with your travel documents. These example phrases help with language practice; entry requirements depend on your nationality and circumstances.
Estou de férias means I’m on vacation; estou visitando amigos means I’m visiting friends; and vou ficar por duas semanas means I’ll stay for two weeks. Use the answer that accurately describes your trip.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou de férias e vou visitar o Rio de Janeiro. | I’m on vacation and I’m going to visit Rio de Janeiro. |
| Vou ficar no Brasil por duas semanas. | I’ll stay in Brazil for two weeks. |
| Vou me hospedar neste hotel. | I’ll be staying at this hotel. |
Ask for repetition if you miss a question
If you do not understand a question, ask politely for it to be repeated: Pode repetir, por favor? You can also say Ainda estou aprendendo português (I’m still learning Portuguese) and ask the officer to speak more slowly.
Keep your passport, itinerary, and accommodation details available if requested. Language phrases cannot replace official instructions, so follow the officer’s directions and use a qualified interpreter if you need one for an important matter.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Pode falar mais devagar, por favor? | Could you speak more slowly, please? |
| Ainda estou aprendendo português. | I’m still learning Portuguese. |
| Você pode repetir a pergunta? | Could you repeat the question? |
Remember: Prepare truthful, concise phrases for your destination, accommodation, and length of stay. Follow the official process and ask for repetition when needed.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Prepare truthful, concise phrases for your destination, accommodation, and length of stay. Follow the official process and ask for repetition when needed.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
