Ask for Directions in Portuguese When Driving in Brazil — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm the next turn or exit
Use virar à direita or virar à esquerda for turning right or left. A saída is an exit, and a retorno is a place or maneuver used to turn back, depending on the road context.
If you are driving, ask a passenger to read directions and follow road signs and local rules. A short question is easier to understand than a long instruction given at the last moment.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| É para virar à direita na próxima rua? | Do I turn right at the next street? |
| Qual saída eu pego para o centro? | Which exit do I take for downtown? |
| Tem um posto de gasolina mais adiante? | Is there a gas station farther ahead? |
Ask where to park and how to enter
Estacionamento can mean parking or a parking lot. Ask where the entrance is and whether there is a marked space for visitors.
For a parking garage, you may hear garagem. Confirm the street and entrance before turning, especially when a building has several access points.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde fica a entrada do estacionamento? | Where is the parking entrance? |
| Posso estacionar aqui por alguns minutos? | Can I park here for a few minutes? |
| A entrada da garagem é pela rua de trás? | Is the garage entrance on the back street? |
Remember: Practice turn and parking phrases before the trip; confirm directions calmly and follow signs and local driving rules.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice turn and parking phrases before the trip; confirm directions calmly and follow signs and local driving rules.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
