    Introduce yourself naturally

A quick greeting is enough to start. Say your name and that you have just moved in; acabei de me mudar means “I’ve just moved.” You do not need a long introduction for a brief hallway chat.

Prazer em conhecer você is a friendly “nice to meet you.” In casual speech, you may also hear Prazer! by itself.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Introduce yourself naturally
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Oi, sou a Maya. Acabei de me mudar para o apartamento 302.Hi, I’m Maya. I’ve just moved into apartment 302.
Prazer em conhecer você!Nice to meet you!
A gente ainda está organizando a mudança.We’re still getting settled after the move.

Ask a practical question about the building

A practical question gives the conversation an easy next step. You can ask about packages, trash collection, the intercom, or where residents usually find information.

Use Você sabe…? (Do you know…?) when you are asking for information without assuming the neighbor is responsible for managing the building.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask a practical question about the building
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Você sabe onde deixam as encomendas?Do you know where packages are left?
Que dia recolhem o lixo reciclável? What day is the recycling collected?
Tem um grupo do prédio para avisos? Is there a building group for announcements?

    End the conversation warmly

A brief exchange does not need to become a long visit. Foi bom conhecer você (It was nice meeting you) and Até mais (See you later) are natural ways to close.

If the neighbor offers a recommendation, thank them and mention you may try it. A simple follow-up creates connection without making a promise you do not intend to keep.

Remember: For a first neighbor conversation, prepare your name, a sentence about moving in, one practical question, and a friendly goodbye.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

For a first neighbor conversation, prepare your name, a sentence about moving in, one practical question, and a friendly goodbye.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
