Portuguese for Uber Rides in Brazil: Pickup, Questions and Drop-Off

Your ride is nearby, but the driver writes “Do outro lado?” Learning a few location words can help you explain where you are, understand the question and confirm the pickup. Practice the exchange before you are standing outside with a suitcase.

    Describe a visible landmark

A short location message can be more useful than a long introduction: Estou na entrada principal do hotel. — I’m at the hotel’s main entrance. Use the actual pickup point shown in your app, including any instructions for airports or large venues. Locations and rules vary.

The conversations below are original written examples for language practice. They are not messages from an actual booking or a promise that every driver uses these expressions. Follow current instructions in the app for your trip.

    Message or questionMeaningOne possible response
Já cheguei.I’ve arrived.Estou na entrada principal. — I’m at the main entrance.
Em frente a quê?In front of what?Em frente à farmácia. — In front of the pharmacy.
Do outro lado?On the other side?Não, deste lado, perto do hotel. — No, on this side, near the hotel.
Está perto do portão?Are you near the gate?Sim, perto do portão azul. — Yes, near the blue gate.
Tem bagagem?Do you have luggage?Sim, uma mala. — Yes, one suitcase.

    A pickup conversation

Motorista: Boa tarde. Estou em frente ao hotel.
Passageiro: Boa tarde! Estou na entrada lateral, perto da farmácia.
Motorista: Do outro lado da rua?
Passageiro: Isso, do outro lado. O ponto de embarque no app é aqui?
Motorista: O app mostra a entrada principal.
Passageiro: Entendi. Vou conferir as instruções no app.

Meaning: The driver is at the front of the hotel; the passenger is at a side entrance near a pharmacy. The exchange reveals that their locations do not match. The passenger checks the app instead of assuming that any nearby curb is a suitable pickup point.

Learn the contrast between entrada principal and entrada lateral. Also notice perto de — near — and em frente a — in front of. A landmark helps only if both people can identify the same place. Do not cross or move into an unsafe location just to complete a phrase.

Confirm the trip details before entering

Uber’s official rider guide, checked on October 21, 2026, advises checking the driver, car model and license plate against the app before boarding. A spoken greeting does not replace those checks.

Useful language includes Vou conferir a placa no app. — I’ll check the plate in the app. If details do not match or something is unclear, use the current help and trip options in the app. This lesson covers communication, not every safety feature or operational policy.

    Understand questions during the ride

You may hear É esse o endereço? — Is this the address? Check the destination rather than replying automatically. If it needs changing, make the change through the app using the options available for the trip.

    • Pode aumentar um pouco o ar-condicionado? — Could you turn up the air conditioning a little?
    • Pode diminuir o volume, por favor? — Could you lower the volume, please?
    • Desculpa, não entendi a pergunta. — Sorry, I did not understand the question.
    • Pode explicar de outro jeito? — Could you explain it another way?

You can keep the interaction brief. Ainda estou aprendendo português sets an expectation; it does not require you to continue a conversation you do not want.

    Confirm the drop-off

    Motorista: Pode ser aqui?
    Passageiro: É a entrada principal?
    Motorista: Sim, ali à direita.
Passageiro: Certo. Pode parar onde for permitido, por favor. Obrigado!

The driver asks “Is here okay?” The passenger checks which entrance it is and asks for a permitted stopping place. A request to stop is always subject to the actual street conditions and restrictions.

    Practice three location decisions

    1. You are at a side entrance. Which word distinguishes it from the main entrance?
    2. The driver asks Em frente a quê? Say that you are in front of the pharmacy.
    3. You hear Pode ser aqui? Ask whether this is the main entrance.
    Show possible answers
    1. Lateral: Estou na entrada lateral.
    2. Estou em frente à farmácia.
    3. É a entrada principal?

Change the landmark and entrance for another round. Continue with hotel check-in or restaurant questions from our Brazil travel hub.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I tell an Uber driver where I am in Portuguese?

Use Estou…, followed by a clear location: Estou na entrada principal do hotel or Estou em frente à farmácia. Check that it matches the pickup instructions in your app.

What does do outro lado mean?

It means on the other side. In a pickup conversation, confirm which side of the street or landmark the person means before moving.

How do I ask an Uber driver to stop here?

You can ask Pode parar aqui, por favor? Choose a permitted, suitable location and follow the app’s current trip instructions; a language request does not override road restrictions.
