Pair se + imperfect subjunctive with the conditional

For a hypothetical or less likely situation, Brazilian Portuguese commonly pairs se with the imperfect subjunctive and puts the result in the conditional: Se eu tivesse mais tempo, viajaria mais. English often translates this as “If I had more time, I would travel more.” The two verb forms work together to frame an imagined situation and its result.

The conditional often ends in -ia for regular verbs: falaria, comeria, partiria. Common irregular forms include seria, teria, faria, diria, and poderia. The imperfect subjunctive has forms such as tivesse, fosse, fizesse, and pudesse.

Se eu morasse perto, iria a pé.If I lived nearby, I would walk.
Se a gente tivesse férias, viajaria pelo Brasil. If we had vacation time, we would travel around Brazil.
Se eles pudessem escolher, fariam a reunião on-line.If they could choose, they would hold the meeting online.

Keep real future possibilities in a different pattern

A realistic future condition usually uses the future subjunctive after se and a future-oriented result: Se eu tiver tempo, vou cozinhar. The hypothetical pattern imagines or distances the situation: Se eu tivesse tempo, cozinharia. The choice changes the speaker’s framing; it is not simply a formal-versus-informal distinction.

When listening, pay attention to the verb after se first. Tiver commonly points to an open future possibility, while tivesse often introduces an imagined condition. Then notice whether the result uses vou fazer or faria.

Se você quiser, podemos marcar para amanhã.If you want, we can schedule it for tomorrow.
Se você quisesse, poderia participar da aula.If you wanted to, you could join the class.
Se eu soubesse a resposta, eu te contaria. If I knew the answer, I would tell you.

Use the pattern to imagine a practical alternative

Hypotheticals are useful for talking about a different schedule, a possible move, an ideal job, or a change you would make. Keep the imagined situation concrete. One short condition and one result are easier to follow than a long chain of clauses.

You can omit the subject when the verb already makes it clear, but repeating it may help when you contrast two people or emphasize who would act. Practice the complete sentence, including the result, so the verb endings become easier to retrieve.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Finish this prompt with a real idea: “Se eu tivesse mais tempo, …”. Then make a second sentence with a condition that could happen soon: “Se eu tiver tempo amanhã, …”.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
