    The tens (super regular)

    40quarenta80oitenta
    50cinquenta90noventa
    100cem

The pattern from 21 to 99

Just insert e ("and") between the ten and the unit: vinte e um (21), trinta e cinco (35), oitenta e sete (87), noventa e nove (99). No exceptions. Learn the tens and 1–9 and you own the whole range.

    Real-world examples

    • Quanto custa? — Vinte e cinco reais. (How much is it? — 25 reais.)
    • Meu voo sai às dezoito e trinta. (My flight leaves at 6:30 PM. You may see 24-hour time on schedules and signs.)
    • Tenho trinta e dois anos. (I'm 32 years old.)
    • Moro no apartamento cinquenta e sete. (I live in apartment 57.)
    • São dez para as três. (It's ten to three.)

    Twenty-five reais.
    Customer: Obrigado, vou levar.
    Thanks, I'll take it.

    Your turn

    2. Say that something costs 25 reais.
    3. Say your age using tenho and a number.
    Show suggested answers
    1. Quanto custa um café?
    2. Custa vinte e cinco reais.
    3. For example: Tenho trinta e dois anos. Adapt the number to your age.

    Cem vs. cento

Cem is exactly 100. As soon as you add anything, it becomes cento: cento e um (101), cento e cinquenta (150). Then duzentos (200), trezentos (300), and so on.

    Practice this today

Read out loud: your phone number, your age, your zip code, the price of your coffee, and today's date. Do this once a day for a week and numbers stop being a bottleneck.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you say phone numbers in Portuguese?

Brazilians say phone numbers digit by digit, in pairs where possible. 9 8765-4321 becomes 'nove — oitenta e sete, sessenta e cinco — quarenta e três, vinte e um'.

Do numbers change with gender in Portuguese?

Only 1 and 2 (and the hundreds from 200 up). 'One book' is 'um livro' (masc.) or 'uma mesa' (fem.). Everything from 3 through 99 stays the same.

How do I say prices in reais?

The word 'reais' is the plural of real. 'R$ 25,50' is said 'vinte e cinco reais e cinquenta centavos'. Note that Brazilians use a comma as the decimal separator, not a period.
