At a Pet Store in Brazil: Food, Leashes, and Cat Litter — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Name the pet supplies you need
Ração is pet food, coleira is collar, guia is leash, caixa de transporte is carrier, and areia sanitária is cat litter. A pet store is a pet shop or loja de animais; many Brazilian businesses use the English words pet shop in their names.
Ask for a specific size or version when you know what your pet needs. If you are uncertain about a food choice, ask a veterinarian rather than selecting a product based only on a store conversation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde ficam as guias para cães? | Where are the dog leashes? |
| Vocês têm uma caixa de transporte para gato? | Do you have a cat carrier? |
Ask about sizes, materials, and package quantities
Use tamanho for size, material for material, and pacote for package. Compare items with Qual é a diferença entre…? (What is the difference between…?). Ask how much is in the package before deciding whether it suits your shopping plan.
This question pattern works for a leash, carrier, or litter. Repeat the item name in your question so the staff knows which products you are comparing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é a diferença entre estes dois tamanhos? | What is the difference between these two sizes? |
| Quantos quilos vêm neste pacote? | How many kilos are in this package? |
Check a basic product detail before paying
Ask whether a product matches an animal's size or age only if you are confirming a recommendation you already received. Para filhote means for a young animal or puppy, and para gato means for a cat.
To confirm the price, ask Quanto custa? If you need a different product, explain which feature matters—size, fastening, or container type—rather than describing it only as ‘better.’
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta guia tem fecho de metal? | Does this leash have a metal clasp? |
| Quanto custa o pacote menor? | How much is the smaller package? |
Remember: Learn the product noun, ask about size or quantity, and get professional advice for health or nutrition decisions.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Learn the product noun, ask about size or quantity, and get professional advice for health or nutrition decisions.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
