Check the audio and greet the group

At the start of a video call, check whether people can hear you: Vocês conseguem me ouvir? (Can you hear me?). If your audio is muted, say meu microfone estava desligado (my microphone was off). Keep the opening short so the group can move to the agenda.

Brazilian colleagues may use reunião on-line or videochamada. As in any workplace, the tone depends on the team. Observe how people greet each other and use a formality level that fits the relationship.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Check the audio and greet the group
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Bom dia, pessoal. Vocês conseguem me ouvir bem?Good morning, everyone. Can you hear me clearly?
Desculpa, meu microfone estava desligado.Sorry, my microphone was muted.
A conexão está um pouco instável para mim.The connection is a little unstable for me.

Enter the conversation and ask a clear question

To take a turn, say Posso acrescentar uma coisa? (Can I add something?) or Queria comentar um ponto (I wanted to comment on one point). If several people are speaking, wait for a pause and use the person’s name when you can. This makes your entry easier to follow without needing to speak louder.

When you need clarification, name the topic and ask one question. If the audio cut out, explain that you did not hear the last part; do not guess at a decision that may affect the team.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Enter the conversation and ask a clear question
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Posso acrescentar uma coisa sobre o prazo? Can I add something about the deadline?
Não ouvi a última parte. Você pode repetir?I didn’t hear the last part. Could you repeat it?
Quando você diz prioridade, está falando do primeiro item da lista? When you say priority, do you mean the first item on the list?

Repeat the decision and your next action

Before the meeting ends, confirm what you are responsible for and when it is due. An action item can be tarefa or próximo passo. If you are unsure who owns a task, ask directly so the group does not leave with different assumptions.

Remote work already has its own vocabulary guide on this site. This article focuses on taking part in a live video call, where timing, audio, and turn-taking shape the conversation.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Repeat the decision and your next action
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Então eu envio a primeira versão até quinta-feira.So I’ll send the first version by Thursday.
Quem fica responsável por confirmar os dados?Who will be responsible for confirming the data?
Podemos revisar esse ponto na próxima reunião?Can we review this point in the next meeting?

Remember: Choose one phrase for entering a turn and one phrase for confirming an action. Practice them at a calm pace before your next call.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Choose one phrase for entering a turn and one phrase for confirming an action. Practice them at a calm pace before your next call.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
