Moving Out of a Shared Apartment in Brazil: Portuguese for the Handover — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm the timeline with the household
Say the date you plan to move and ask which household tasks need to happen before then. Use vou me mudar no dia… (I am moving on…) and até quando…? (by when…?). Keep your roommates informed if the date changes.
Check the rental or building instructions that apply to your situation. This language guide does not determine notice periods, deposits, or legal responsibilities.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vou me mudar no dia vinte e oito. Que tarefas precisamos combinar? | I am moving out on the twenty-eighth. Which tasks do we need to coordinate? |
| Até quando preciso devolver a chave? | By when do I need to return the key? |
Decide what happens to shared items
A shared appliance or piece of furniture may belong to one resident or have been bought together. Ask who wants to keep it and whether anyone plans to reimburse another person. Confirm the decision in writing so that everyone has the same understanding.
For items no one wants, agree whether to donate, sell, or discard them. Do not remove something that belongs to another roommate without checking.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A estante é compartilhada ou pertence a alguém? | Is the bookcase shared or does it belong to someone? |
| Alguém quer ficar com a mesa? | Does anyone want to keep the table? |
Coordinate cleaning and return of keys
Ask which rooms or common areas you need to clean and who will check them. Take your personal belongings and make sure shared items remain where the group agreed. If you are unsure which office or person receives a key, confirm before your final day.
A polite recap can close the conversation and help the next resident prepare.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Eu limpo meu quarto e a gente combina a cozinha juntos? | I will clean my room; shall we coordinate the kitchen together? |
| Deixei as chaves com a pessoa que você indicou. | I left the keys with the person you indicated. |
Remember: Confirm the move date, agree on shared property and cleaning, and follow the instructions that apply to returning the keys.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm the move date, agree on shared property and cleaning, and follow the instructions that apply to returning the keys.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
