    Frequently asked questions

What's the shortest way to explain ser vs. estar?

Ser is for what something IS (identity, permanent traits). Estar is for how something IS RIGHT NOW (states, locations, moods). If you can add 'right now' to the English sentence, use estar.

Is 'to be from' ser or estar?

Ser. Origin is permanent identity: 'Eu sou dos Estados Unidos' (I am from the United States). Even if you move, where you're from doesn't change.

    Is location always estar?

For movable things, yes: 'O restaurante está fechado' (the restaurant is closed right now) but 'O restaurante fica na Rua Augusta' (the restaurant is on Augusta Street — permanent location often uses ficar instead of estar or ser).

Why does 'ele é feliz' mean something different from 'ele está feliz'?

'Ele é feliz' = he's a happy person (character trait). 'Ele está feliz' = he's happy right now (mood). Same word 'feliz', totally different message depending on which verb you pick.
