At a Tennis Lesson in Brazil: Ask About Levels and Equipment — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Choose a class for your experience
Aula de tênis is a tennis lesson, and iniciante means beginner. Tell the instructor how much you have played, then ask what level to choose. Class labels differ by club, so confirm the description rather than relying on the name alone.
Ask whether the lesson is individual or in a group and how many students share the court. That can help you understand what the scheduled session includes.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta aula é para iniciantes? | Is this lesson for beginners? |
| Quantos alunos ficam na mesma quadra? | How many students share the court? |
Ask about the racket and court
Raquete is racket, and quadra is court. Ask whether the club lends or rents a racket and what type of shoes it recommends for that surface. The facility can tell you which rules apply on its courts.
Confirm the court surface if you need to prepare for it: saibro is clay, and quadra rápida is a hard court. Ask staff to confirm the surface at your booking.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso alugar uma raquete para a aula? | Can I rent a racket for the lesson? |
| A quadra é de saibro ou rápida? | Is the court clay or hard? |
Clarify an instruction during practice
If a correction is hard to follow, ask the instructor to repeat it or demonstrate the movement. You can say which part you missed: the grip, position, or direction of the ball.
Follow the coach’s guidance and ask before changing courts or equipment. Confirm the next lesson’s date and time before you leave.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Pode demonstrar o movimento mais uma vez? | Could you demonstrate the movement one more time? |
| Quando é a próxima aula? | When is the next lesson? |
Remember: Confirm the class level, group size, racket options, and court surface with the club, then ask the coach to clarify instructions.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm the class level, group size, racket options, and court surface with the club, then ask the coach to clarify instructions.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
