At a Bowling Alley in Brazil: Ask About Lanes, Shoes, and Scores — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask for a lane and game duration
Boliche means bowling and pista is the lane. Ask whether a lane is available and how long a game or booking lasts. Prices and booking limits vary by venue and time, so confirm the current details at reception.
Tell staff how many people are playing. If you have a reservation, give the booking name and time so they can find it.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tem uma pista disponível para quatro pessoas? | Is a lane available for four people? |
| Quanto tempo dura uma partida? | How long does one game last? |
Check shoes and equipment
Ask whether bowling shoes are required and how the rental works. The venue can tell you which shoe size to choose and where to change. Do not assume that regular shoes are allowed on the lane.
If you need help entering names on the screen or setting up the game, ask an attendant to show you.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso alugar sapatos para jogar? | Do I need to rent shoes to play? |
| Você pode ajudar a colocar os nomes na tela? | Could you help us enter the names on the screen? |
Follow the score and ask for help
Placar means score. Ask staff to explain a symbol if you are unsure what happened on the screen. You can also confirm whose turn it is and how the venue handles extra time if your booking is ending.
A short question is enough: o placar está certo? (is the score correct?) or de quem é a vez? (whose turn is it?).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| De quem é a vez agora? | Whose turn is it now? |
| Você pode explicar este símbolo no placar? | Could you explain this symbol on the scoreboard? |
Remember: Confirm lane availability, game duration, footwear, and the venue’s current rules when you arrive.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm lane availability, game duration, footwear, and the venue’s current rules when you arrive.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
