Hiking Gear in Portuguese: Ask About Shoes, Water, and Rain Jackets — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Name common clothing and equipment
Bota is a boot, tênis is an athletic shoe, mochila is a backpack, and capa de chuva is a rain jacket or poncho. Which items fit a particular trail depends on the route and conditions; ask a local guide or park staff for current recommendations.
Garrafa de água means water bottle. Ask whether you should bring one and whether drinking water is available at the starting point. Confirm the answer for that location.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Que tipo de calçado é adequado para esta trilha? | What kind of footwear is suitable for this trail? |
| Devo levar uma capa de chuva? | Should I bring a rain jacket? |
Ask whether equipment is included or available
If you booked a guided outing, ask whether equipment is included or whether you need to bring your own. The provider can explain what it supplies and what participants should prepare themselves.
Use alugar for ‘to rent’ and emprestar for ‘to lend.’ If you need to borrow or rent something, confirm the price, size, and return time directly with the provider.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O equipamento está incluído no passeio? | Is equipment included in the outing? |
| É possível alugar botas aqui? | Is it possible to rent boots here? |
Describe what you have with you
A quick inventory can help a guide answer your question. Say tenho uma mochila pequena (I have a small backpack) or estou sem capa de chuva (I don’t have a rain jacket). The adjective pequena agrees with mochila, which is feminine.
If you are uncertain about an item, show a picture or name it and ask whether it is suitable for the route. Follow the guide’s advice for the specific outing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tenho uma garrafa de água e uma mochila pequena. | I have a water bottle and a small backpack. |
| Estou sem botas. Tênis serve para esta trilha? | I don’t have boots. Are athletic shoes suitable for this trail? |
Remember: Learn the gear words, then ask a local guide about the specific route, forecast, and equipment needs.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Learn the gear words, then ask a local guide about the specific route, forecast, and equipment needs.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
