    Name the period neutrally

A career break can be called um período afastado do mercado de trabalho or uma pausa na carreira. You can give the dates or a general length without presenting the period as something you need to apologize for.

If the reason is personal, say so only if you want to. An interviewer may ask about your availability for the role; that is different from needing to hear private details.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Name the period neutrally
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Fiquei fora do mercado de trabalho por cerca de um ano.I was away from the job market for about a year.
Fiz uma pausa na carreira entre 2024 e 2025.I took a career break between 2024 and 2025.

Share the context at the level you prefer

If you want to explain, keep it factual and brief: precisei cuidar de um familiar (I needed to care for a family member) or me dediquei a estudos (I focused on study). You can also choose a broad explanation such as motivos pessoais (personal reasons).

There is no single sentence that fits every circumstance. Use wording that is accurate for you and disclose only what you are comfortable discussing.

    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Durante esse período, cuidei de assuntos familiares.During that period, I took care of family matters.
Usei esse tempo para concluir uma formação em design.I used that time to complete a design qualification.

Bring the answer back to the role

After the context, say Estou pronta para voltar ao trabalho (I'm ready to return to work; speaker: woman) or Estou disponível para começar em… (I'm available to start on…). Then connect one current skill or interest to the position.

Keep the answer proportional to the question. A clear two- or three-sentence response can address the break and then return the conversation to your qualifications.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Bring the answer back to the role
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Agora estou pronta para voltar ao trabalho e contribuir com minha experiência em vendas.I'm now ready to return to work and contribute my sales experience. (speaker: woman)

Remember: Explain a career break honestly and briefly, share only what you choose, and finish with your readiness and relevant experience.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Explain a career break honestly and briefly, share only what you choose, and finish with your readiness and relevant experience.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
