Comprehensive vs. Compreensivo: Choose the Right Portuguese Word — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use abrangente or completo for a comprehensive report
When comprehensive means wide-ranging or covering the main parts of a subject, use abrangente or completo. The best choice depends on whether you want to emphasize breadth or completeness.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O relatório apresenta uma análise abrangente do projeto. | The report provides a comprehensive analysis of the project. |
| Precisamos de uma lista completa dos documentos. | We need a comprehensive list of the documents. |
Use compreensivo for a person who is understanding
Compreensivo usually describes someone who listens patiently or shows understanding. The noun compreensão means understanding. Do not choose compreensivo merely because the English word comprehensive looks similar.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Minha chefe foi compreensiva quando expliquei o atraso. | My manager was understanding when I explained the delay. |
| Agradeço sua compreensão. | I appreciate your understanding. |
Ask whether you mean coverage or empathy
If you are describing how much information a document covers, use abrangente or completo. If you are describing how a person reacts to someone’s situation, use compreensivo or compreensiva. That meaning check makes this false friend easy to catch.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O guia é abrangente e cobre vários níveis. | The guide is comprehensive and covers several levels. |
| Ela foi compreensiva com a minha situação. | She was understanding about my situation. |
Remember: Comprehensive often means abrangente or completo; compreensivo usually means understanding.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Comprehensive often means abrangente or completo; compreensivo usually means understanding.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
