Use romance for a book-length novel

English novel usually refers to a long work of fiction. In Brazilian Portuguese, romance is the common word for this kind of book. Novela often means a television serial, especially a telenovela, and can also refer to a shorter literary narrative depending on context.

When you talk about a specific book, the author, cover, or phrase romance literário can make the meaning clear. Do not assume novela is always a direct translation of English novel.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Use romance for a book-length novel
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Estou lendo um romance brasileiro.I’m reading a Brazilian novel.
Minha avó acompanha uma novela à noite. My grandmother follows a TV serial at night.
O romance tem mais de trezentas páginas. The novel has more than three hundred pages.

Let the medium tell you which word fits

Ask whether you mean a book or a television series. Romance is a good starting point for a novel you read; novela is common for an ongoing TV story. In literary discussion, novela can name a shorter prose form, so add livro or série when the context could be unclear.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
