Checking Into a Hostel in Brazil: Portuguese for Beds, Lockers, and Shared Rooms — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm your booking and bed
A reserva is a reservation and a cama is a bed. Dormitório compartilhado means shared dorm room; quarto privativo means private room. Give the name on the booking and ask which bed is assigned to you.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tenho uma reserva no nome de Alex Morgan. | I have a reservation under the name Alex Morgan. |
| Qual é a minha cama no dormitório? | Which bed is mine in the dorm? |
Ask about lockers, towels, and shared spaces
A locker is commonly called armário or locker; a padlock is a cadeado. Ask whether towels and a lock are included or whether you need to bring your own. Banheiro is bathroom, and cozinha compartilhada is shared kitchen.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tem armário com chave ou preciso trazer um cadeado? | Is there a locker with a key, or do I need to bring a padlock? |
| A toalha está incluída na diária? | Is a towel included in the nightly rate? |
Understand hostel rules and breakfast times
Ask the time with que horas começa? and the rules with quais são as regras? If you arrive late, confirm how to enter the building. Listening for até means “until,” which is useful for opening hours and check-out times.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Que horas o café da manhã começa? | What time does breakfast start? |
| Se eu chegar depois da meia-noite, como faço para entrar? | If I arrive after midnight, how do I get in? |
Remember: Confirm your assigned bed, what the nightly rate includes, and how to access the hostel before you leave reception.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm your assigned bed, what the nightly rate includes, and how to access the hostel before you leave reception.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
