How to Join a University Study Group in Brazil: Portuguese Phrases — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Invite classmates with a clear topic and time
Use estudar junto or fazer um grupo de estudos for studying together or forming a study group. An invitation is easier to answer when it says what you will review and offers a specific time. You can ask whether people prefer to meet in person or online.
Topam estudar…? is an informal invitation meaning are you up for studying…? With a less familiar classmate, use a more neutral question.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês topam revisar o capítulo quatro amanhã? | Are you up for reviewing chapter four tomorrow? |
| Que horário funciona melhor para vocês? | What time works best for you? |
Ask for clarification when you need it
You can participate even while learning Portuguese. Ask someone to explain an idea another way, give an example, or repeat a key word. If you understood part of the explanation, say which part so the group knows where to continue.
Não entendi bem… (I did not quite understand…) is more useful than pretending you followed. For another example, ask você pode dar um exemplo?
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Não entendi bem a diferença entre esses conceitos. | I did not quite understand the difference between these concepts. |
| Você pode explicar essa parte de outro jeito? | Can you explain this part another way? |
Finish with a manageable plan
Before the group ends, recap the topics and choose one next step. Someone might prepare questions, locate a reading, or suggest a meeting time. Keep the plan manageable so people can follow it.
If the group chat is busy, post the date and topic in one message. Confirm the location or link if it changes.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Na próxima vez, podemos revisar os exercícios cinco e seis. | Next time, we can review exercises five and six. |
| Eu mando o link da chamada no grupo. | I will send the call link in the group chat. |
Remember: Set a clear topic and time, ask for clarification, and finish by agreeing on one next step.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Set a clear topic and time, ask for clarification, and finish by agreeing on one next step.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
