Me vs. Mim in Portuguese: “Call Me,” “For Me,” and “For Me to Do” — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Start with two reliable sentence patterns
Use me with a verb in patterns such as “Ela me chamou” (She called me). Use mim after many prepositions, as in “Isso é para mim” (This is for me). If the pronoun is doing the action of a following infinitive, standard written Portuguese uses eu: “É para eu fazer” (It is for me to do).
English uses me in all three translations, so translating word by word hides the difference. First identify whether the pronoun is attached to a verb, follows a preposition, or performs the next action.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ela me chamou. | She called me. |
| Este presente é para mim. | This present is for me. |
| Este texto é para eu ler. | This text is for me to read. |
Use me in common spoken verb phrases
In everyday Brazilian conversation you will hear me before a verb in sentences such as “Me ajuda?” and “Você me conhece?”. More formal writing has additional rules for pronoun placement; learn those separately rather than replacing every spoken pattern.
Mim does not replace me in “Você me ouviu?”. In that sentence the verb ouviu acts directly on the person represented by me.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você me ouviu? | Did you hear me? |
| Me ajuda com esta palavra? | Can you help me with this word? |
| Ela me mandou uma mensagem. | She sent me a message. |
Use mim after prepositions, but learn comigo as a whole
Para mim, de mim and entre mim e você are useful chunks. With com, the ordinary form is comigo: “Pode falar comigo”. Do not build a general rule that mechanically changes every English “with me” into com mim.
“Para mim, está bom” gives your opinion: “For me, it’s fine.” There is no following infinitive for you to perform, so mim fits that pattern.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Para mim, está bom. | For me, it’s fine. |
| Isso fica entre mim e você. | This stays between you and me. |
| Você pode falar comigo. | You can talk to me. |
Ask who is doing the next action
Compare “O café é para mim” with “O café é para eu levar”. In the first, you receive the coffee. In the second, you are the person who will take it. That is the useful distinction behind mim versus eu before an infinitive.
You may hear para mim fazer in informal speech. For the standard form expected in careful writing, use para eu fazer. Recognizing variation does not require treating a speaker’s everyday variety as a personal failing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A mensagem é para mim. | The message is for me. |
| A mensagem é para eu enviar. | The message is for me to send. |
| Você quer que eu leia agora? | Do you want me to read it now? |
A message at work
Read this original conversation and identify the pronoun’s job in each turn. Then replace mensagem with documento and send with read.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A: Essa mensagem é para mim? | A: Is this message for me? |
| B: É para você me ajudar com a resposta. | B: It’s for you to help me with the reply. |
| A: Entendi. É para eu responder hoje? | A: I see. Am I supposed to reply today? |
| B: Sim. Pode falar comigo se tiver dúvida. | B: Yes. You can talk to me if you have a question. |
Remember: Finish three sentences aloud: Você me…, Isso é para mim, and Isso é para eu…. Give the last one an action, such as ler or fazer.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Choose the language for the situation
Now use the explanation to decide what fits the situation. Check the reason for the answer, not just the option you chose.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Finish three sentences aloud: Você me…, Isso é para mim, and Isso é para eu…. Give the last one an action, such as ler or fazer.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
