At a Food Truck in Brazil: Order, Pay, and Pick Up in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Read the menu and place your order
Food truck is commonly used in Brazil for a mobile food stand. Ask what is popular or whether an item comes with a side. If the menu is hard to read, point to the item and ask the employee to confirm the name and price.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é o mais pedido? | What is the most popular item? |
| Esse sanduíche vem com batata? | Does this sandwich come with fries? |
Ask how long the order will take
Demora quanto tempo? asks how long something takes. You can also ask where to wait or whether the order will be called by name or number. Listen for senha, which means ticket or order number in this context.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quanto tempo demora para ficar pronto? | How long will it take to be ready? |
| Vocês chamam pelo nome ou pela senha? | Do you call the name or the order number? |
Collect the food and check the order
A retirada is the pickup point. Before walking away, check that the order has the right sides or drinks. If something is missing, say faltou… (“…is missing”) and name it calmly.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A senha 42 está pronta? | Is order number 42 ready? |
| A bebida não veio. Pode conferir, por favor? | The drink didn’t come. Could you check, please? |
Remember: The key words are pedido (order), demora (takes time), senha (order number), and retirada (pickup).
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
The key words are pedido (order), demora (takes time), senha (order number), and retirada (pickup).
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
