Assim vs. Portanto: Draw a Conclusion in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use portanto to mark a conclusion
Portanto means therefore or consequently and clearly presents the next idea as a conclusion drawn from the previous information. It is especially common in structured explanations and formal writing.
The conclusion should follow logically from the facts you gave. A connector cannot make unrelated ideas into a sound argument.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Todos os documentos foram aprovados; portanto, a inscrição está completa. | All the documents were approved; therefore, the application is complete. |
| O prazo terminou ontem. Portanto, precisamos consultar a secretaria. | The deadline ended yesterday. Therefore, we need to check with the academic office. |
Use assim for ‘this way’ or ‘as a result’
Assim often means this way or in this manner: Faça assim (Do it this way). It can also introduce a result, similar to so or thus, when the surrounding sentence makes that connection clear.
Because assim has several uses, include enough context to show whether you mean a method or a conclusion.

| Assim, a equipe conseguiu terminar a tarefa hoje. | That way, the team was able to finish the task today. |
| O ônibus não passou; assim, chegamos mais tarde. | The bus did not come, so we arrived later. |
Choose the connector that matches your tone
In everyday speech, então or por isso may sound more conversational when you explain a result. Portanto is clear but can feel more formal. Assim works well when the method or consequence is already easy to infer.
Punctuation depends on sentence structure. When in doubt, separate complete ideas with a period and use the connector at the start of the new sentence.

|---|---|
| Perdi o horário do ônibus; por isso, vou pegar o próximo. | I missed the bus time, so I'll take the next one. |
| A proposta atende aos critérios. Portanto, podemos avançar. | The proposal meets the criteria. Therefore, we can move forward. |
Remember: Use portanto for an explicit conclusion; use assim when you mean ‘this way’ or when context makes a result clear.

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
All the documents were approved; therefore, the application is complete.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use portanto for an explicit conclusion; use assim when you mean ‘this way’ or when context makes a result clear.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
