    Ask about movies and showtimes

Cinema is both a movie theater and the art of film. For the venue, ask what sessões (showings) are available and whether the film is dublado (dubbed) or legendado (with subtitles).

A sessão das sete means the seven o’clock showing. Check the day, time, and language format before choosing a session.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask about movies and showtimes
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Que sessões têm para este filme hoje? What showtimes are there for this movie today?
O filme é dublado ou legendado? Is the movie dubbed or subtitled?
Tem uma sessão começando depois das oito?Is there a showing starting after eight?

Choose tickets and confirm the seats

Ingresso is a ticket. You may be asked whether you want meia-entrada (a discounted ticket for eligible groups) or inteira (full price); eligibility rules apply, so check the cinema’s current information if you plan to request a discount.

Ask whether seats are marked and where your row is. If the ticket has a seat number, repeat it back to confirm before entering the theater.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Choose tickets and confirm the seats
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quero dois ingressos para a sessão das oito.I’d like two tickets for the eight o’clock showing.

Em que fileira ficam os assentos 12 e 13?Which row are seats 12 and 13 in?

Order popcorn and find the theater

Pipoca means popcorn. At the snack counter, ask for the size you want and whether a drink comes with the combo. The menu usually shows sizes and prices.

To find your screen, ask where sala (theater/screen) number is and follow the signs. If you need a restroom before the movie, banheiro is the everyday word.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Order popcorn and find the theater
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Uma pipoca média e uma água, por favor.A medium popcorn and a bottle of water, please.
Esse combo inclui refrigerante?Does this combo include a soft drink?
Onde fica a sala 4?Where is theater 4?

Remember: At a cinema, check the session time and language format, confirm the ticket and seat, then ask where the screen is.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

At a cinema, check the session time and language format, confirm the ticket and seat, then ask where the screen is.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
