Portuguese for a Beach Day in Brazil: Useful Questions and Phrases — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask about a chair or umbrella
Beach services vary by location, so ask what is available and how payment works before you sit down or order. Cadeira is chair, guarda-sol is beach umbrella, and alugar means to rent.
A quick question gives the attendant a chance to explain that particular setup. If you do not understand the answer, ask for the price or arrangement to be repeated.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês alugam cadeira e guarda-sol? | Do you rent chairs and beach umbrellas? |
| Quanto custa? | How much does it cost? |
| Posso pagar com cartão? | Can I pay by card? |
Order a drink or a snack
Use queria (I would like) to make a friendly request. You can name the item, add por favor, and ask whether the vendor has a particular option. Local menus and sellers differ, so use this as a flexible sentence frame.
If you have an allergy or dietary restriction, explain it directly and ask about ingredients. For more detailed food needs, use our separate guide to explaining allergies and dietary requirements in Portuguese.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Queria uma água, por favor. | I’d like a bottle of water, please. |
| Tem água de coco? | Do you have coconut water? |
| Pode trazer a conta? | Could you bring the bill? |
Find a bathroom or ask for help
To find a facility, ask where it is rather than assuming there is one nearby. Banheiro means bathroom; perto means nearby. If you need help, say com licença to get someone’s attention politely.
These phrases help with communication and do not replace local signs or guidance. Follow posted instructions and ask staff when a service or access point is unclear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde fica o banheiro mais próximo? | Where is the nearest bathroom? |
| Você sabe onde tem uma lixeira? | Do you know where there is a trash bin? |
| Com licença, pode me ajudar? | Excuse me, could you help me? |
Remember: Practice one question about renting a chair, one order, and one question about where a facility is. Replace the nouns with what you actually need.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice one question about renting a chair, one order, and one question about where a facility is. Replace the nouns with what you actually need.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
