Get a Student ID Card at a Brazilian University — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Find the office that issues the card
Carteirinha de estudante is a common informal name for a student ID. Universities may issue a campus access card and a separate student-benefit document; ask which one you need for your purpose.
Start at student services, the registrar, or the location named in your enrollment instructions. Procedures differ between institutions.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde posso solicitar a carteirinha da universidade? | Where can I request the university student ID? |
| Este cartão dá acesso ao campus ou também serve como identificação estudantil? | Does this card provide campus access or also serve as student identification? |
Ask which information or photo is needed
Ask whether the request requires a recent photo, enrollment confirmation, or another item. Do not send personal documents to an unofficial email or contact.
If you are shown a form, ask staff to explain a field you do not understand instead of guessing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso levar uma foto ou ela é tirada aqui? | Do I need to bring a photo, or is one taken here? |
| Quais dados preciso informar no formulário? | Which details do I need to provide on the form? |
Check card status and collection options
Use retirar for collecting an item and prazo de emissão for issuance time. Ask whether the university sends a message when the card is ready and whether digital access is available while you wait.
Confirm where to collect the card and whether you need to show a student number or other confirmation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como posso acompanhar o pedido da carteirinha? | How can I check the status of my student ID request? |
| Existe uma versão digital enquanto o cartão não fica pronto? | Is there a digital version while the card is being prepared? |
Remember: Ask which card you need, use the university's official request process, and confirm how you will receive it.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask which card you need, use the university's official request process, and confirm how you will receive it.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
