Split Household Bills with Roommates in Brazil: Portuguese Phrases — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm which expenses are shared
Conta can mean a bill or account. Name the expense—água (water), luz (electricity), or internet—then ask how the household divides it. The split may depend on an agreement among the people who live there, so do not assume every home uses the same method.
If one person pays the provider and others reimburse them, confirm the amount and date in the group chat. Keep the conversation factual and use the bill itself as the reference.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como vamos dividir a conta de internet? | How are we going to split the internet bill? |
| A conta de luz vence na sexta-feira. | The electricity bill is due on Friday. |
Send a clear reminder
A reminder can include the bill, the amount each person agreed to pay, and the deadline. Use sua parte for your share and até dia… for by the… Keep the tone neutral, especially if you do not know whether someone has seen the message.
For Pix or another payment method, share only the payment details the household has agreed to use. This language guide does not verify a transaction or determine a person's financial obligation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Sua parte da internet ficou em quarenta reais. Você consegue enviar até amanhã? | Your share of the internet came to forty reais. Can you send it by tomorrow? |
| Mandei o comprovante no grupo. | I sent the payment receipt in the group. |
Check a difference in the amount
If a bill changes, ask what period it covers and whether the amount includes another service. Rather than assuming someone calculated incorrectly, compare the same bill and billing dates.
Use só para confirmar (just to confirm) to introduce a clarification. If the household cannot resolve the question, the account holder can check the provider's official bill or support channel.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Só para confirmar: esse valor é referente a qual mês? | Just to confirm: which month does this amount cover? |
| Você pode mandar uma foto da conta completa? | Can you send a photo of the full bill? |
Remember: Name the bill, agree on how to split it, and confirm the amount and due date in writing.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name the bill, agree on how to split it, and confirm the amount and due date in writing.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
