Brazilian Electricity Bills: Portuguese Words for Charges and Due Dates — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Recognize the basic parts of a bill
A conta de luz or conta de energia is an electricity bill. Common labels include valor total (total amount), data de vencimento (due date), consumo (consumption), and leitura (meter reading). Labels can vary between providers, so use them to identify a question rather than infer a complete billing rule.
Check the account holder, service address, billing period, and due date. If you are helping someone else, make sure you have permission to discuss the account and avoid sharing the document publicly because it may contain personal information.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é a data de vencimento desta conta? | What is the due date for this bill? |
| A leitura corresponde a qual período? | Which period does the meter reading cover? |
Ask about a line or amount you do not recognize
Point to the label and ask what it means: o que significa esta cobrança? (what does this charge mean?). If the total seems different from the previous month, ask the provider to explain the itemized amount and the dates covered.
Describe the comparison without assuming an error: o valor veio mais alto este mês (the amount came higher this month). Then ask which detail the provider needs to check the account.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode explicar por que o valor aumentou? | Can you explain why the amount went up? |
| Esta cobrança aparece em qual período? | Which period does this charge apply to? |
Confirm where to check account-specific information
For questions about a payment, meter reading, fee, or deadline, use the provider’s official account channel and ask for an explanation tied to your bill. Your location, plan, and provider can affect what appears, so general vocabulary does not replace the information on the account.
If a representative opens a request, ask for the protocolo number and when to check for an answer. Repeat the key detail back: então, o vencimento é dia quinze? (so the due date is the fifteenth?).
Remember: Use the Portuguese labels to ask specific questions, then confirm amounts and deadlines with the provider shown on your bill.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use the Portuguese labels to ask specific questions, then confirm amounts and deadlines with the provider shown on your bill.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
