Eu pedi um café quente, mas veio gelado. — “I ordered a hot coffee, but an iced one arrived.” The sentence identifies both sides of the mismatch. Acho que houve uma troca. — “I think there was a mix-up” is a useful opener when you do not know what happened.
Start with the item rather than accusing a particular person. A server may need to check the order record. If you are unsure whether this is your order at all, ask Este pedido é para a minha mesa? — “Is this order for my table?”
Choose the right contrast
- Pedi sem açúcar, mas veio com açúcar. — I ordered it without sugar, but it came with sugar.
- Pedi duas unidades, mas só veio uma. — I ordered two, but only one arrived.
- Pedi para levar, mas veio no prato. — I ordered it to go, but it came on a plate.
- Esse item não aparece no meu pedido. — This item does not appear on my order.
Do not describe an item as wrong only because you expected a different recipe. If the name was unfamiliar, ask what the dish contains and explain your expectation. A specific ordering error and a difference in taste need different conversations.
Ask for a check and confirm what happens next
You: Com licença. Acho que houve uma troca. Pedi sem gelo. — Excuse me. I think there was a mix-up. I ordered it without ice.
Staff: Vou conferir o pedido. — I’ll check the order.
You: Obrigado. Você pode me avisar antes de trazer outra bebida? — Thank you. Can you let me know before bringing another drink?
The staff has offered to check, not yet confirmed a replacement. If a replacement is proposed, ask what it is and whether there is any charge. The actual resolution depends on the situation; these examples do not promise a free replacement or establish a business’s policy.
Practice a precise repair
- You ordered two sandwiches, but one arrived. State the quantity mismatch.
- You are not sure a plate belongs to your table. Ask before treating it as your meal.
- The staff says they will check. Ask to hear the result before another item is prepared.
Show possible answers
- Pedi dois sanduíches, mas só veio um.
- Este prato é para a nossa mesa? — Is this dish for our table?
- Pode me avisar depois de conferir, antes de preparar outro? — Can you let me know after checking, before preparing another one?
Practice with an ordinary preference such as ice or a takeaway container. If the issue is a food allergy or another safety concern, state it explicitly and seek clear information; a vague “wrong order” does not communicate that concern. For this drill, keep the contrast to one detail so your partner can identify it immediately.

Use an everyday food or drink phrase in Real Life Portuguese as your starting point, then change one detail in a spoken role-play. Practice explaining the mismatch with pedi… mas veio… instead of memorizing only the order.
